Monprene® Features

What is Monprene®?

Monprene® TPEs are a versatile family of TPEs composed of saturated styrene block copolymer rubbers and thermoplastic olefin resins. A wide array of properties can be achieved using this versatile technology. We have compounds within the complete Shore A hardness range (0 to 90), the specific gravities range from 0.89 to 2.0 and optical properties from transparent to opaque. Monprene® compounds exhibit a rubber-like feel and can easily be processed on conventional thermoplastic equipment.

What are the Characteristics of Monprene®?

  • Exceptional elastic recovery
  • High tear strength (depends on hardness)
  • Resistant to skin oils
  • Easily colorable
  • Bondable to olefinic substrates
  • FDA compliant
  • Odorless
  • High tensile strength at low hardness
  • Exceptional low temperature properties
  • Upper use temperature of 120°C (250°F)
  • Excellent UV stability
  • Chemical resistant to acids, bases and alcohols

What are the Material Performances of Monprene®?

Hardness
Monprene® TPE compounds are available from the ultra soft gel range (30 Shore 00) up to and throughout the complete Shore A range.

Elasticity
Monprene® compounds are highly elastic. It is ideal for applications that require rubber-like characteristics.

Physical & Mechanical Strength
Monprene® TPEs have excellent physical and mechanical strength properties. They are ideal for applications such as grips or caster wheels that require excellent abrasion resistance and durability.

Surface Characteristics
The surface characteristics and feel of Monprene® elastomers range from high co-efficient of friction (high tack) to low co-efficient of friction with a dry feel. Grades with higher tack are generally more clear than equivalent grades with less tack.

Surface Finish
All grades of Monprene® product line exhibit excellent mold surface reproducibility. Surface finishes ranging from high gloss to dull can be achieved depending on the mold finish.

Opacity
Monprene® TPE compounds are available in grades that range from water clear to opaque. The low gravity (0.90) compounds are generally either clear or transparent. The highly filled grades (1.1 to 2.0) are non-transparent or opaque.

Chemical Resistance
Monprene® TPEs exhibit excellent chemical resistance to water, acids, bases, alcohols, detergents and skin oils.

Colors
Monprene® elastomers compounds can be produced in essentially any color, from fluorescent to pastels. All grades are available in custom pre-colored form.

FDA
Monprene® FDA compliant grades are available for a variety of applications. Most FDA grades are in compliance with FDA c.21 CFR 177.1810 and ISO 10993.

Design for Different Processing Techniques
Monprene® TPEs are available in both injection molding and extrusion grades. Monprene® can be custom compounded into a wide range of viscosity characteristics to fit the required processing parameters. Teknor Apex engineers are available to assist you with mold simulation and mold design with our Mold Flow software.

What Grades of Monprene® are Available?

Monprene® compounds can be tailored for specific applications. Whether your application is for sporting goods, medical, food contact, industrial, or consumer applications, we have or can develop a grade to suit your needs.

Some of the most popular Monprene® series are:

Monprene® 2700 Series:
A series of general-purpose opaque compounds finding use in non-stringent applications. Compounds are available from 20 through 90 Shore A.

Monprene® 2800 Series:
A high performance series specific for injection molding (M grades) or extrusion (E grades). These grades offer superior rubber feel and exceptional elastomeric properties. Compounds are available from 20 through 90 Shore A.

Monprene® Gel Series:
Monprene® gels are softer than the Shore A range of hardness. Monprene,® gels are recommended for applications where very soft tactile feel and strength are required, such as cushions and padding between hard substrates and personal contact. These high strength and high flow elastomers may be used in overmolding processes on polyolefin substrates. Monprene® gels may be processed on conventional injection molding equipment. Available grades range from 30-65 Shore 00.

Custom Grades:
In addition to the general purpose grades, customized formulations can be developed to meet a variety of application requirements. Almost any grade can be developed, especially those in the sub 20 Shore A region.
