Vinyl Institute Honors Dr. Robert S Brookman for Outstanding Service to the Industry

ARLINGTON, VA, U.S.A., June 10, 2002: Dr. Robert S Brookman, internationally renowned for his achievements in the vinyl industry, has received the Vinyl Institute's Roy T. Gottesman Leadership Award for outstanding service. In a 43-year career spent entirely in the field of vinyl, Dr. Brookman has been a corporate president, chief executive of resin and compound production, director of business development, initiator of international ventures, polymer scientist, and activist for the advancement of vinyl.
Dr. Brookman is the fifth recipient in the 20-year history of the award.
"Robert Brookman is known throughout the vinyl industry for his vision and commitment," said Vinyl Institute president Tim Burns. "He has helped build and grow companies, expand to international markets, revitalize technology, streamline manufacturing, and foster new product development. As a speaker, author, and longtime supporter of the work of the Vinyl Institute, he has been a public ambassador for our products and our industry and a vocal defender of vinyl's value."
Dr. Brookman's current position is that of vice president for business development at Teknor Apex, which he joined in 1998. "Drawing on his scientific training, deep understanding of vinyl technology, and long experience with joint ventures, acquisitions, and start-ups, Bob Brookman is uniquely gifted as a catalyst for new ventures and has been an important force for the expansion of our industry," said Jonathan D. Fain, president of Teknor Apex. "Even now he is in Singapore to supervise technology transfer following our recent purchase of Singapore Polymer Corporation-an acquisition in which he played a crucial role."
In presenting the Gottesman Award, the Vinyl Institute's Tim Burns noted that "in the course of his distinguished career, Robert Brookman has formed personal relationships with industry leaders around the world and worked with customers wherever vinyl products are manufactured."
Before joining Teknor Apex, Robert S Brookman served for nine years as president of Colorite Polymers Company, producer of vinyl compounds and specialty PVC resins. Earlier he worked for Franklin-Spartech Plastics as vice president and general manager of its PVC compounding operation; and for Pantasote Inc. as vice president of technology, responsible for PVC resin development, compounding, extrusion, and calendering. He began his career with Firestone Plastics Co., where he spent 15 years and was director of PVC resin development.
Dr. Brookman has long been active in the Vinyl Institute and served as a member of its board. He belongs to the Society of Plastics Engineers and is an SPE Fellow.
He received a B.S. degree in chemistry from the City College of New York and earned a Ph.D. degree in polymer chemistry at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute.
The Roy T. Gottesman Leadership Award was named in honor of the founding director of the Vinyl Institute. Previous recipients have included Fred Krause, John Russ, William Patient, and William Carroll.
