Teknor Apex Introduces Standard Grades of Flexible Vinyl for EMI Shielding in Wire & Cable

Drawing on twenty years of experience in compounding electrically conductive flexible polyvinyl chloride (PVC) on a custom basis, Teknor Apex has developed standard extrusion grades of this antistatic material, it was announced today by Donald G. Ouellette, Industry Manager, during the International Wire & Cable Symposium.

Tradenamed Vidux (reg. trademark), the black shielding compounds provide levels of conductivity required for dissipating electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference (EMI /RFI) in coaxial, data communications, and other information-bearing wire and c able.

The formulation and process technology that we have developed for incorporating carbon black fillers enables us to produce vinyl compounds that exhibit lower levels of viscosity in extrusion than conventional materials of this type while still delivering high levels of conductivity in end-use," Ouellette said.

Three standard extrusion grades of Vidux flexible PVC compounds are now available, with Shore A Hardness ratings from 76 to 91 and volume resistivities from 2.5 to 85 ohm-cm. By comparison, nonconductive plastics typically have volume resistivities of 1 014 ohm-cm, and plastics with antistatic additives have volume resistivities of 1010 ohm-cm.
