Super-Soft, Highly Elastic TPE Opens New Design Possibilities

An exceptionally soft and elastic thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) now available in samples from Teknor Apex Company provides a lower-cost, non-alle rgenic alternative to latex rubber and promises new capabilities for designers of medical devices. Teknor Apex formally introduced the developmental material in its exhibit at MD&M East.
Designated Tekron (Reg. Trademark) 96-E0807A-03NT, the compound is a TPE alloy based only on 21 CFR-listed feedstocks (polyolefin and SEBS rubber). It has a rating of only 3 on the Shore A Durometer test and an ultimate elongation test value of 1100%.
"These numbers translate into super softness," said Peter M. Galland, Industry Manager for Specialty Compounds. "The durometer appears to be lower than that of any other TPE on the market, and the elongation is among the highest available."
The new TPE has a smooth, dry-to-the-touch surface, Galland added, and can be formulated for greater optical transparency than latex.
Applications for the Tekron compound, which can be extruded or injection molded, may include seals, gaskets, plunger tips, linings, and overmolded coatings or cushions. "Because this material expands the boundaries of TPE performance, we need time to as sess its full potential," Galland said. "We're confident that prospective customers will discover uses that we could not foresee, and we would work with these companies, tailoring formulations to meet their specific needs."
The new compound is part of a series of high-elongation grades developed by Teknor Apex Plastics Division to provide functional and tactile properties similar to those of latex rubber without causing allergic reactions such as those experienced by some users of latex products. Recently the company also introduced a medical-tubing grade of Tekron TPE, designated 95X0832E-55, with a Shore A hardness value of 55.
"Tekron compounds offer lower material costs than latex and, as thermoplastics, are easier and less expensive to process," Galland said. "Unlike latex, they require no post-mold curing."
Beyond latex-replacement, Tekron 96-E0807A-03NT TPE can open new design possibilities because it can be easily overmolded onto other components, imparting valuable functions without costly assembly steps. "One example is energy management." Galland said. "The softness and elasticity of this new compound make it a good candidate for a cushioning layer on components in systems where it is essential to absorb or control vibration or shocks."
