Capstocks for Cellular and Rigid Vinyl Decking, Fencing and Beyond

By John Macaluso | March 20, 2017

When introduced to the market around 1990, original composite decking materials did not live up to their zero maintenance expectations. Composite decking enjoyed a spike in popularity for a few years, but many consumers began noticing problems with discoloration, mold and decay when the material was put to the test in real-world situations. This was a major set-back for the composite decking industry.

Teknor Apex was among the compounders that saw a value and accepted the challenge to develop highly weatherable and durable capstocks for the decking and railing market. Our on-going research and development expanded our product line in this area and continues to do so even today, as we formulate new products for use in the growing outdoor living spaces market.

We currently have a line of vinyl based compounds and alloys in our portfolio that are specifically formulated for use in outdoor applications. Our capstock compounds deliver superior resistance to abrasion, stain and decay, and deliver excellent weatherability and color hold. In addition, Teknor Apex has developed highly weatherable white capstocks, with enhanced resistance to yellowing.

Homeowners and builders have a variety of materials to choose from when constructing outdoor living and entertainment spaces today. From vibrant colors and bright whites, to various textures and low or high gloss finishes, vinyl building and construction products for outdoor applications can be developed to match whatever look and feel the consumer is trying to achieve.

In addition to decking, railing and fencing, vinyl capstock materials are used in many applications for new home construction – siding, windows and  trim - to name a few.

Non-residential applications are one of the fastest growing market segments for capstock compounds. These compounds are being used in boardwalk, marina and dock applications because of their ability to resist wear and tear, prevent rotting, splintering and resist mold and mildew formation. Teknor Apex vinyl capstock alloys work well in these areas because of their ability to withstand extreme and fluctuating weather conditions.

Vinyl capstock compounds have grown by leaps and bounds over the past 20 years. Teknor Apex continues to work with our customers to meet the challenges they face in outdoor living space and home construction markets by formulating compounds that withstand the test of the elements and time.
