New Color Concentrates Boost Impact Strength of Polyolefins by 45%, Making Possible Cost Savings through Thinwalling

TekTuff™ Concentrates from Teknor Color Can Be Used with Existing Colors without Need for a New Color Match or a Change in Loading Percentage

PAWTUCKET, RI, U.S.A., March 4, 2016: In response to cost pressures faced by processors serving the consumer products industry, Teknor Color Company has developed a family of color concentrates with an innovative additive that makes possible thinner-walled molded parts without sacrificing strength.

New TekTuff™ color concentrates for polyolefins contain an impact strength-enhancing additive that can be used to increase the strength of containers and other products or to design thinner-walled parts that weigh less and save on material cost. When used with existing colors from Teknor Color, these new concentrates can be loaded at the same ratio and do not need to be re-matched.

TekTuff concentrates have been successfully used in commercial production of containers to reduce part weight while maintaining impact properties.

To confirm the effectiveness of TekTuff color concentrates on polypropylene, Teknor Color designed a drop-impact test to simulate actual end use in drinking cups. Compared to the cups made with standard concentrate, those containing TekTuff concentrate exhibited a 45% increase in strength and were less likely to break.

“New TekTuff concentrates help manufacturers of cups, containers, and other consumer products to achieve the right balance of durability and cost,” said Edwin Tam, manager of marketing and business development. “At minimal loadings, these concentrates will help improve product performance and/or reduce cost without adversely affecting other properties.”
