BioVinyl®: A Flexible PVC Option with a Lower Carbon Footprint

As the Fourth Utility expands, sustainability is more than a buzzword—it’s a design requirement. That’s why Teknor Apex developed BioVinyl®,
a PVC compound line that combines the performance of traditional vinyl with bio-based plasticizers to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

BioVinyl® supports flexible cable applications while contributing to more environmentally conscious manufacturing and material selection.

Why BioVinyl®?

BioVinyl® is formulated with Dow Ecolibrium™ bio-based plasticizer, derived from 98% bio-based carbon per ASTM D6866. Some BioVinyl® formulations also include low-carbon-emission PVC resins made using renewable energy and/or bio-attributed raw materials.

Key Benefits:

  • Bio-based plasticizer with reduced carbon footprint
  • Compatible with traditional vinyl recycling streams
  • Flexibility and durability comparable to conventional PVC
  • RoHS compliant; may support LEED credit potential in some applications

Application Areas

BioVinyl® has been used in a range of applications, including:

  • Wire and cable jacketing and insulation
large coil of black cable or wire, neatly wound and placed on the ground. The cable appears to be made of a flexible material, possibly rubber or plastic.
  • Interior and exterior flexible cords
Fiber optic cable digital data glowing end internet connection fast
  • Tray cable jackets, riser-rated and fiber optic jackets

It offers comparable tensile strength, elongation, and low-temperature performance to standard flexible PVC compounds, with grades available for both interior and exterior use.

A Step Toward Smarter Sustainability

Teknor Apex is committed to sustainable innovation. As part of that mission, BioVinyl® gives manufacturers a new way to:

  • Lower the greenhouse gas profile of cable materials
  • Support green building initiatives
  • Offer customers more environmentally responsible product options
