High-Performance Vinyl Compounds & Sustainable PVC Solutions

Vinyl (PVC) compounds are custom-formulated thermoplastics made by combining PVC resin with stabilizers and performance additives, with plasticizers added when flexibility is required. They’re used across industries — from medical tubing to window profiles — because they balance flexibility, strength, and cost. At Teknor Apex, we engineer high-performance vinyl compounds that meet demanding mechanical, aesthetic, and sustainability goals.

Why Choose Custom Vinyl Compounds for Your Application

Choosing the right vinyl compound is critical to achieving the performance, durability, and cost targets of a finished product. Vinyl compounds can be engineered with a wide range of properties—from flexibility and impact strength to rigidity, weatherability, flame performance, and chemical resistance—making formulation choices a key driver of success in real-world applications.

A well-matched compound influences how a product processes, how it performs over time, and how it meets regulatory and sustainability requirements. The wrong formulation can lead to challenges such as inconsistent processing, premature failure, or unnecessary material cost, while the right one helps ensure reliability, compliance, and long service life.

Teknor Apex brings deep formulation expertise across flexible PVC, rigid PVC, elastomer blends, and sustainable vinyl solutions. By tailoring compounds to specific application needs, processing methods, and performance criteria, we help customers optimize product design, streamline manufacturing, and confidently meet both technical and market demands.

PVC Elastomer Blends – Extreme Conditions & Enhanced Performance

PVC elastomer blends extend the performance of flexible PVC by providing improved abrasion resistance, chemical and oil resistance, and low temperature flexibility in extreme temperatures and harsh environments. Other advantages include compression set resistance, rapid spring-back, and hot melt strength. These compounds are available in very soft formulations (as low as 35 Shore A) and process well on standard PVC equipment.

Sustainable Vinyl Solutions

Teknor Apex knows each of our customers define sustainability differently. That's why we offer multiple sustainable vinyl solutions. Our portfolio of materials prioritize responsible resource usage through recycled content and bio-based alternatives, without sacrificing the performance and versatility vinyl is known for.

How to Select the Right Vinyl Compound

Selecting the right vinyl compound starts with understanding the specific demands of your application and processing environment. Key performance requirements—such as flexibility, stiffness, impact resistance, weatherability, flame performance, or chemical resistance—should be evaluated alongside how the material will be formed, whether by extrusion, injection molding, or calendering.

Processing considerations also play a critical role. Factors such as melt flow behavior, temperature sensitivity, surface finish, and dimensional stability can influence productivity and finished-part quality. In parallel, sustainability goals and regulatory requirements may guide material selection, including the use of recycled or bio-based content, low-smoke formulations, or compounds designed to meet certifications such as UL, RoHS, or REACH.

By aligning performance needs, processing conditions, and compliance requirements early in the design process, engineers and buyers can narrow the field of suitable vinyl compounds and select a formulation that delivers consistent results throughout the product lifecycle.

Vinyl Compound Case-Studies & Industry Applications

Vinyl compounds are used across a wide range of industries, from consumer products and construction to infrastructure and building systems. Understanding how material performance, perception, and sustainability intersect in these applications is critical when selecting the right vinyl solution.

To support informed decision-making, Teknor Apex has developed in-depth resources that examine both the science behind vinyl compounds and how they are evaluated in real-world markets:

Understanding the Science and Perceptions of Vinyl in Consumer Goods explores how vinyl compounds perform in everyday products, addressing durability, safety, lifecycle considerations, and common misconceptions around PVC use in consumer applications.

Science and Perceptions of Vinyl in Green Building examines the role vinyl materials play in sustainable construction, including environmental impact, regulatory considerations, and how vinyl compounds can contribute to green building objectives when properly specified.

Together, these resources provide practical insight into how vinyl compounds are applied, evaluated, and trusted across industries—helping engineers, designers, and sustainability professionals make confident material choices.

Frequently Asked Questions:

BioVinyl® incorporates bio-based content derived from renewable resources while maintaining the performance characteristics of traditional flexible PVC. This approach helps reduce reliance on fossil-based feedstocks and supports sustainability goals without requiring changes to processing or end-use performance.

UL-certified vinyl compounds are commonly required in applications such as building and construction, wire and cable, appliances, and certain industrial products. Certification needs are driven by the specific application and regulatory environment rather than the industry alone.

A vinyl compound is a formulated material made by combining PVC resin with stabilizers and performance additives, and plasticizers when flexibility is required. Compounding allows vinyl materials to be tailored for specific properties such as flexibility, strength, flame performance, durability, and processability.

Flexible vinyl compounds are typically selected for applications requiring bendability, softness, or impact absorption, while rigid vinyl compounds are used when stiffness, dimensional stability, and structural strength are needed. The choice depends on functional requirements, processing method, and end-use conditions.

Processing method, temperature sensitivity, melt flow behavior, surface finish, and additive compatibility all influence compound selection. Aligning formulation with extrusion, injection molding, or calendering requirements helps ensure consistent processing and reliable finished-part performance.
